Hope of Heaven PDF Print E-mail
webcover Heaven is something we don't often spend our time thinking about. The daily pressures of the here and now seem to fog our mind from the future hope we have in Christ. Yet when we experience death, and we all do at some point, it is at those points that a flood of questions begin to swirl in our hearts and minds. Questions that we haven't found the time to answer in our busy lives, but all of a sudden become the most pressing questions to be answered. Where do we go when we die? What is heaven like? Death causes us to think about heaven in greater depth.

Why do we not see the hope of heaven as that which will stir us to be proactive Christians? In many respects I believe that this is a result of a number of centuries in which this doctrine has slowly morphed into misplaced thinking. For many years our personal affinity to heaven has centered around the hope of escaping this world and so we have discarded the hope of Jesus return, discarded the hope of a resurrected body, and discarded the hope of a renewed creation. As a result this has created a hope that looks to leaving this world for another, donning a highly spiritualized body, and leaving creation behind. No wonder we don't see our heavenly hope exercising its rightful influence in the here and now.

This series hopes to rectify our misdirected hope, and place our true heavenly hope back on the agenda. The desire is that all will see the hope of heaven afresh and see how it should fruitfully impact our Christian walk. May we walk away renewed in our understanding, deepened in our faith, and rejuvenated in the glorious hope that awaits us.

Fix your eyes on Jesus , Hebrews 11-13 (4th Term 2010) PDF Print E-mail

term4hebrews

Hebrews is a magnificent letter written to Christians who are in real danger of giving up…they had been exposed to fierce persecution. They had been physically assaulted, their homes had been plundered, some had been cast into prison on account of their faith, others had been ridiculed in public because of their resolute trust in Jesus. Many of these Jewish Christians had accepted this adversity joyfully. But other had shrunk back…others were in danger of compromise…” (Raymond Brown: Hebrews: BST: IVP: 1982).

Hebrews is an important part of God’s word for us to consider not because we face persecution (as they did) but because like them we are often in danger of giving up. This letter is about remembering. It is about holding fast to Jesus. It is about taking care to listen to God.

Discovering Jesus - 3rd term PDF Print E-mail

discoverjesus

Jesus Christ is one of the most influential men to have ever lived. His influence is seen in cities across the globe where church spires often tower over city skylines. His influence on politics and law continues thousands of years after he lived. Today graveyards are littered with crosses, a symbol that many people choose to mark the place of a loved one’s remains. His ethics reach into every sphere of life, influencing such diverse subjects as marriage, abortion, conservation and justice.  People have claimed all sorts of things for him and done the most extraordinary things in his name. These things have been a paradox; some have been excellent while others have been horrendous. Just on a billion people in the world today, would in some way, use the label Christian to describe themselves.

But who was this Jesus? Is he simply an outdated religious figure? Was he a good man – perhaps even a religious genius? What did he actually say that has kept people captivated for so many years? What did he claim for himself? Why do people still follow him?

Discovering Jesus is designed to help you answer these questions for yourself…

Psalms - discover the Songs of ascent (Term 2, 2010) PDF Print E-mail
psalms

Psalms 120-134 make up a distinct section in the book of Psalms. Each Psalm carries the title 'a song of Ascents'. We don't know the historical situations that gave rise to them being written, although they were almost certainly used when the exiles returned to Jerusalem from Babylon. Wilcock says about them, "Nearly all of the fifteen share family likenesses, in their brevity, their repetitions, their homely parables, and their love for Zion..." The Psalms seem to be grouped in sets of three...which is how we will study them...they seem to follow a pattern of distress, power, security...
